- High-Temperature Piezoelectric Microphones for Combustion Noise Measurement
Wireless Data Acquisition System Hardened for Use in Space
In response to NASA Phase I SBIR solicitation subtopic Z7.01-1003 Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) Flight Sensors and Ground Testing Technologies, the Wirelessly Activated Remote DAQ for Space (WARDS) contract focuses on the development of a non-intrusive, onboard wireless data acquisition system for use in spacecraft. Utilizing a network of wireless sensors, the proposed system reduces weight and eliminates the need for structural penetration, all while providing remote activation capabilities following a two-year inactive period. Subsequent sensing operations will occur for a minimum of one month. In addition to reducing weight, the wireless network can help address technical and logistical challenges associated with sensor installation. Since the proposed system uses wireless communication, it does not require penetrating or damaging the vehicle skin and provides the end-user with the ability to deploy more sensors due to a relaxation of cable routing and weight requirements. Limiting the cable routing requirements reduces installation effort over current systems and provides for substantially more flexible sensor placement options.

While spacecraft instrumentation is the primary target application, this system can support other applications which require environmentally hardened and low power capabilities. Funding provided by NASA will be used to develop a functional prototype based on the requirements and specifications provided by NASA while navigating concept restraints.
Development of a High-Temperature Piezoelectric Microphone for Combustion Noise Measurement
In response to NASA Phase I SBIR solicitation subtopic A1.02 Quiet Performance – Propulsion Noise which seeks innovations in “tools and technologies for predicting, diagnosing, and mitigating the noise impact of commercial aircraft operations on communities near and around airports”, IC2 has proposed the development of a high-temperature piezoelectric microphone for combustion noise measurement. Taking advantage of IC2’s advanced MEMS fabrication and packaging techniques, this robust, fully calibrated sensor will be capable of direct, quantifiable fluctuating pressure measurements in flow environments with temperatures up to 600°C. Research and development of this product will not only benefit the public but will benefit other IC2 piezoelectric microphones and dynamic pressure sensors by extending their operating temperature range. This sensor best serves organizations such as NASA, the DoD, universities, and other researchers requiring high-temperature microphones for model-scale ground and full-scale static engine testing applications. Development of this sensor will address the need in the aerospace industry for an affordable and reliable aft-engine noise measurement system which enables more effective environmental noise reduction.
