Users can look forward to enhanced support, broader distribution channels, and continued innovation driven by this new partnership.

DirectShear Wall Shear Stress Sensors

Wall shear stress (often normalized by dynamic pressure to yield skin friction) is a key metric in fluid dynamics, yet it has been a long-standing challenge for researchers to accurately measure in a time-resolved manner. DirectShear wall shear stress sensors were specifically designed to overcome these historical measurement challenges.

DirectShear sensors are MEMS devices that directly measure the shear force exerted by fluid flow upon a surface via a floating element suspended by folded tethers, providing a spring constant that deflects under fluid force. The deflection is measured using differential capacitors and a comb finger design to amplify the capacitive plate area. Originally developed with NASA’s support, the technology evolved over years of research at the University of Florida and IC2, culminating in the commercial launch of DirectShear in 2017.

DirectShear sensors provide:

  • Time-resolved direct wall shear stress measurements
  • Compact, robust sensor package for flush mounting
  • High dynamic range and bandwidths
  • Suite of sensor models and sensor packages for different applications
  • Simultaneous mean and fluctuating measurements

By providing direct, accurate, and real-time wall shear stress measurements, DirectShear sensors enable better-informed design decisions and deeper insights into flow behavior.
