DynaMic System
High-precision pressure-field microphone and dynamic pressure sensor
Enabling accurate aerodynamic noise testing through trusted calibration techniques.
DynaMic® is a breakthrough dynamic pressure sensor and aeroacoustic microphone designed for aerospace researchers who demand accuracy in challenging environments. The 1/8” flush-mountable microphone seamlessly embeds into wind tunnel models, capturing high-frequency pressure fluctuations while minimizing self-noise.
- Flush-mount design – minimized airflow disturbance for more accurate results.
- Wide frequency range – capture high-frequency data in model- and full-scale test campaigns.
- MEMS technology – lower cost per channel and robust construction for large arrays.
- IEPE-powered – plug-and-play with IEPE-enabled data acquisition systems.
- Multiple models available – 50 kHz & 120 kHz bandwidth options to match your application.
IC2’s innovative approach enables higher density acoustic phased arrays through significantly reduced cost per channel – without compromising on performance. The sensor’s high dynamic range and bandwidth capture a wide spectrum of acoustic data, and its flush-mount design provides minimal flow disturbance and precise results.
Each sensor comes with a calibration datasheet detailing its performance characteristics.
- The standard calibration is an acoustic calibration at 1kHz and a resonance measurement using a laser vibrometer.
- The advanced calibration includes the standard calibration plus a full magnitude and phase response using our patented reciprocal calibration method across the entire measurement bandwidth.

DynaMic’s low cost and high-bandwidth / high-SPL performance makes the sensor an excellent candidate for replacement of precision condenser microphones in aerodynamic measurement applications.
The advanced calibration method leverages the reciprocal nature of piezoelectric transduction, using an electrical drive signal to actuate the sensor in reverse and a laser vibrometer to sense the actuated deflection. Through established electromechanical relations, the sensitivity can be found to a high degree of certainty from this deflection measurement. The method is applicable at all frequencies up to and beyond the resonant frequency of the sensor, as actuation drive electronics and modern laser vibrometers are capable of much greater bandwidths (Mills et al., 2020).
Multiple small vents etched through the diaphragm are used to equilibrate the static pressure between the cavity and the test environment, enabling use in vacuum and/or pressurized facilities.
Back-side contact piezoelectric MEMS microphones, combined with advanced packaging techniques, enable ultra-smooth sensor installation – eliminating flow disturbances generated by the sensor itself.
- Reduced packaged sensor size – higher density acoustic arrays and finer spatial resolution
- Low-profile format – allows flush mounting in scale-model wind tunnels
- Dramatically reduced cost per sensor – enabling high channel-count arrays
- IEPE capable – eliminates need for specialized external power supplies
- Consistent performance between sensors – monolithic (wafer-level) construction and underdamped response reduce phase variation between microphones
- Surface mount installation
- no through-wall installation required
- eases array placement restrictions
- reduces installation cost and time
- Smooth flow-facing surface for sensor, packaging, and array – reduces / eliminates flow disturbances
- Robust sensor construction – can handle moisture and particulates present in the flow
- Designed for your aeroacoustic testing needs
- dynamic range, bandwidth, resolution that fully meet aeroacoustic testing requirements

- Compatible with commercially available IEPE-enabled data acquisition systems.
- The current provided to the preamplifier may be adjusted by the user (typically from 4−20 mA), with higher currents enabling the preamplifier to maintain performance when driving long cables and/or experiencing high-frequency, high-amplitude events.
- Minimizes equipment requirements (and associated procurement and deployment costs) for large array applications, especially when leveraging existing systems or commercially available IEPE-enabled data acquisition systems.
- IC2 offers a standalone IEPE power supply if your existing DAQ solutions are not IEPE compatible.

Does DynaMic measure static pressure?
No, DynaMic only measures fluctuating signals over the bandwidth of <20 Hz – 120 kHz.
Is DynaMic usable in vacuum or pressurized facilities?
Multiple small vents etched through the diaphragm are used to equilibrate the static pressure between the cavity and the test environment, enabling use in vacuum and/or pressurized facilities.
How is the sensor grounded?
The housing is electrically connected to the cable shield, which in turn is connected to the BNC shield/ground; however, the signal conditioner runs on batteries, so the ground for the sensor and signal conditioner should be the DAQ input. If installing the sensor in a metal model, IC2 can provide very thin (0.00025” wall thickness) heat shrink tubing that can be installed over the sensor housing to insulate the sensor from the model.
How is DynaMic calibrated?
These sensors are calibrated using a patented technique leveraging a laser vibrometer to perform a high-frequency reciprocal transducer calibration. This calibration technique allows IC2 to obtain accurate, quantifiable calibrations across the entire measurement bandwidth.
What is the difference between standard and advanced calibration?
The standard calibration is an acoustic calibration at 1kHz and a resonance measurement using a laser vibrometer. The advanced calibration is the standard calibration plus a full magnitude and phase response across the entire bandwidth using the laser vibrometer.
